possible WHITE-TAILED KITE:   On the morning of Aug. 13, 2008 a possible White-tailed Kite was seen at Rue Lamoureux, Aylmer, QC. From the original report by Bernie Ladouceur, who saw "a bird of prey flying north ... It flew with very deep wing beats; the wings were long, pointed and swept back. It had a fairly long tail and appeared to be in between the size of Sharps-shinned Hawk and a Cooper’s Hawk. It looked like a Kite to me ... it looked very gull-like in overall colour (i.e. first winter Ring-billed Gull). The bird was quite whitish overall; noticeable from below was black extending from tips of the wings down through the centre of the wings (I did not note black shoulders – although I may have been seeing them as the bird flapped – I certainly couldn’t determine where the black was on the upper wing); a very pale grey tail; and a dark eye-patch on a whitish head. I am quite certain we saw a White-tailed Kite this morning. It flew over the Lower Aylmer Road and we lost it over a heavily wooded area." Gyrfalcon - Deschênes Rapids, QC - Feb. 25, 2008 - Photo courtesy Richard Waters
GYRFALCON:   On Mar. 1, 2008 a dark phase Gyrfalcon was seen along the Rideau Canal at Queen Elizabeth Driveway and 1st Avenue. It was seen perched in a tree opposite #300 The Driveway and then flew east. It is likely the same bird that was discovered on Feb. 25 that was seen at the Deschênes Rapids, ON & QC. It flew from the Ontario side to the Quebec side, then headed downstream and was last seen sitting on the ice below the rapids. The best vantage if the bird stays in this area would be from the public boat launch by the Britannia Water Purification Plant. One could also check above the rapids from the Britannia Yacht Club and the Coats Building at Tunney's Pasture. It's been a couple of years since a Gyr has been seen in Ottawa, and many years since a dark bird has shown up here! Directions for, and further information about, these sites can be found on the Deschênes Rapids - QC, Deschênes Rapids - ON, Britannia Conservation Area, and Coats Building pages. Received via ONTBirds 5:43 PM, Feb. 25, 2008, thanks to Chris Lewis, Ottawa, ON. Originally found by Richard Waters and Tom Hanrahan.

TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE:   A Townsend's Solitaire was seen from Feb. 16 to at least Feb. 23, 2008 near the corner of County Road 24 (Point Petre Road) and Simpson Road, near Point Petre, in Prince Edward County, ON. It was seen with a small group of Eastern Bluebirds, happily dining on red cedar berries. The bird was observed from the roadside, although a somewhat aggressive and noisy dog that comes to the end of a neighbouring driveway makes observation of the bird something of a challenge. Apparently it has been most recently found in a wider area around Point Petre. Directions for, and further information about, this site can be found on the Prince Edward Point page. Specific directions: From Picton take County Road 10 (Lake Street) from the LCBO and follow it for 13 km to Cherry Valley.
