The Hunt
from On Nights Like This

After him, Derek and David,
roll up your trousers, John¾
The White Stag's been
like wind and gone;
he tipped the styrene cups
that stood to date
this dismal place.

And his hooves pressed
cloven prints into the granite dust
as he passed beneath the clock
whose staring face
went blind with cracks.
Every page that fluttered then
smells fresh as forest and damp grass.

He's hunting gone.
His silver hairs have fallen
on the shoulders of the young.
