Independent Directions to this Site: From Highway 416 take exit 66 (Fallowfield Road). If southbound, a 0.3 km offramp dumps onto Fallowfield Road, where you will turn right or southwest. If northbound, the 0.3 km offramp brings you to Fallowfield Road, where you will turn left or west onto it and in 0.5 km join those coming from the north. Both groups will now follow Fallowfield southwest for an additional 0.4 km to reach Moodie Drive. Turn right or NNW onto it and drive 0.4 km to Spectrum Way. Turn left or southwest into Spectrum and drive 0.1 km to the parking area for the Monaghan Forest. Alternately, you could continue southwest 0.7 km past Moodie on Fallowfield and turn right or NNW into a second parking area for the Monaghan Forest.
Stony Swamp Loop Route Directions: From the Lime Kiln Trail parking area, turn right or southeast onto Moodie Drive and proceed 1.7 km to Spectrum Way. Turn right or southwest into Spectrum and drive 0.1 km to the parking area for the Monaghan Forest. Alternately, you could continue 0.4 km past Spectrum on Moodie Drive to reach Fallowfield Road, then turn right or southwest onto Fallowfield and proceed 0.7 km to a second parking area for the Monaghan Forest to the right or NNW.
Site Description and Birding Information: This site has a rich variety of habitats, an excellent system of trails, and, as a bonus, abuts a significant quarried area to the northwest. The forest is labelled Lorenzetti Forest on some maps, but all the on-site signage calls it the Monaghan Forest. Signs provide trail maps, check carefully before venturing forth. The trails are unlabelled, except for the numbers along an interpretive trail (with no interpretive material).
The quarry is a working operation, but the area adjacent the forest has ponds that attract some gulls, waterfowl and shorebirds in season. During non-working hours or days, it is quiet.
Stony Swamp Loop Route Directions: From the Spectrum Way parking area for the Monaghan Forest , return the 0.1 km northeast on Spectrum to Moodie Drive. Turn right or SSE onto Moodie and proceed 0.4 km to Fallowfield Road, then turn right or southwest onto Fallowfield and proceed 0.7 km to the second parking area for the Monaghan Forest to the right or NNW. Those who've parked there will join our loop now. Follow Fallowfield Road southwest for an additional 1.5 km to Richmond Road and turn right or NNW on it.
