NeilyWorld      Birding Ottawa - Bird Names

         There are many local birders whose mother tongue is French. Some whose only language is French. And since many Anglophones speak only English this table is presented as a communication aid. Even for those who are somewhat bilingual there is difficulty with jargon. Bird names fall into that category. Add to that the fact the names are constantly changing. Perhaps this chart will help sort things out from time to time. It may also be useful when phoning the French language rare bird alert run by Le Club des ornithologues de l'Outaouais in Hull. If you find that the names here are not the most current, or if you discover the inevitable typographical error, please let me know at larry.neily@hotmail.com. I will try to make updates as soon as I confirm any new information.

         The main list is based on the Ottawa Field-Naturalist's Checklist of Ottawa - May 1993 edition. There are two additional lists. The Nearby list contains birds seen outside the 50 kilometre circle, but near enough to potenially occur in the circle in future. The Nearby list is garnered from various sources, and is not to be considered official in any way. The Not Yet list is made up of birds that the author and others speculate may occur in the future. Range expansions, migratory patterns and vagrancy patterns are considered. This list is entirely speculative and just for fun.
