Poem of the Month - August 2003
Return to Poems of the Month List

Before Dawn
from Summer Grass

As my father lay dying
he opened his eyes
and said to my mother
your face ... like the moon

deep in the night
in that hospital room
the cool light shone

and I saw for the first time
how it had been between them
